Rawalpindi Police have arrested two women for throwing an egg at Aleema Khan, sister of PTI founder chairman Imran Khan.
However, it has not revealed the identities of the suspects, triggering backlash from Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s supporters who see establishment and PML-N behind it.
Aleema, a strong critic of Pakistan’s most powerful military establishment, has been actively campaigning for Imran Khan release. Khan, the former premier and widely regarded as country’s most popular leader, has been behind bars for over two years.
The egg-throwing incident has created a storm on Pakistan’s social media with many curious to know the identities of women involved. News channels have also widely shared the footage. The video captured the expression of shock on face of Aleema Khan when egg was hurled at her.
Aleema Khanum (also Aleema Khan), along with her sister Dr Uzma Khan and party supporters, were talking to journalists outside Adiala jail when incident happened. They earlier attended the hearing of Toshakhana case inside jail premises.
Reaction:
PTI has strongly reacted to the incident, holding establishment and Punjab chief minister Maryam Nawaz responsible for it.
It stated that “What we are witnessing is political victimization at its worst…”
Qasim Zaman Khan, cousin of Aleema, described the incident as the lowest, most shameful act of disgrace.
“Only the shameless in this government could even imagine such viciousness. Only the most dishonourable would ever attack a woman of dignity. This is not politics, this is thuggery, an attack on our values, our culture, and every daughter and sister of this nation. This is the video after the attack on her. She stood her ground like a lioness, unshaken and fearless, calming the crowd with dignity and courage. Nothing could deter her. And if they think that throwing eggs can scare our family or stop us from supporting,” Qasim wrote on X.
Police claimed the women involved were supporters of the PTI. “They travelled to Rawalpindi with members of All-Government Employees Grand Alliance to protest for their unmet demands.”
Police say women hurled eggs when Aleema did not answer their question.
PTI supporters are demanding the identities of the involved and the private vehicle which took them away from scene.
