Lahore Weather: More Rains Likely as Monsoon’s Ninth Spell Continues

More widespread rains are likely in Lahore and parts of Punjab during the weekend.

Scattered heavy falls are also expected during the 9th spell, which will continue intermittently till Tuesday. Besides causing urban flooding, widespread rains may add to the flows of already flooded rivers and streams.

Synoptic Situation:

Strong monsoon currents from the Arabian Sea & the Bay of Bengal penetrate the upper and central parts of Pakistan. A westerly wave also affects most upper and central parts of the country.

Pakistan Meteorological Department Forecast:

Met Office predicts more widespread rains with scattered heavy falls in Lahore, Kasur, Okara, Sheikhupura, Sialkot, Narowal, Gujranwala, Gujarat, Mandi Bahauddin, Hafizabad, Murree, Galiyat, Rawalpindi, Jhelum, Attock, Chakwal, Khushab, Noorpur Thal, Sargodha, Nankana Sahib, Faisalabad, Toba Tek Singh, Jhang, Chenot, Sahiwal, Bhakkar, Mianwali, Bahawalnagar, Rahim Yar Khan, Vehari, Pakpattan, Rajanpur, Bahawalpur, Layyah, Multan, Khanewal and Dera Ghazi Khan.

Impacts:

Widespread may generate flash flooding in local nullahs/streams of Murree, Galliyat, Islamabad/Rawalpindi, northeast Punjab, and hill torrents of Dera Ghazi Khan.

Heavy rains may cause urban flooding in Islamabad/Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Lahore, Sialkot and Narowal. Landslides/mudslides may cause road closures in Murree and Galiyat.

Expected Temperatures:

Lahore’s maximum temperatures will likely remain between 31°C and 33°C on Sunday and Monday.

Lahore Rains:

Meanwhile, Lahore and parts of Punjab received significant rains with scattered heavy falls on Saturday. Widespread rains disturbed routine life by causing urban flooding, massive traffic jams and power outages.

Bursts of heavy rains submerged roads and streets, not only in Northern Lahore, but also in several posh localities in knee-deep water. In several areas, roads were presenting pictures of lakes and ponds. Wet conditions and high velocity winds caused tripping of dozens of LESCO feeders. Electricity could not be restored in several areas for even hours after the stoppage of the rains.
