NGC Begins Construction of 220/132kV Grid Station in Gharo Sindh

The National Grid Company of Pakistan (NGC) has commenced construction of 220/132kV Gas Insulated Substation (GIS) at Gharo in Sindh.

Deputy Managing Director (AD&M) NGC, Engr. Rasheed A. Bhutto performed the groundbreaking. He formally laid of the foundation stone. Managing Director Siemens Energy, Engr. Nadeem Ali Kazmi attended the event. Country Director KfW Mr. Sebastin Jacobi also attended the ceremony held at the project site in Thatta, Sindh.

Engineers has designed the project to ensure the reliable transmission of electricity generated by wind power projects in the Gharo Wind Clusters. German development bank KfW, has supported the project with €27 million commitment. The grid station will take two years for completion.

Its key features include: the installation of two 220/132kV, 250 MVA autotransformers. Two 220kV line bays to connect a double circuit transmission line with the Jhimpir and Dhabeji grid stations.  And four 132kV line bays dedicated to linking wind power plants within the Gharo cluster. Together, these components will strengthen Pakistan’s renewable energy infrastructure. And enhance the delivery of clean, green electricity to the national grid.

MD NGC Altaf Hussain:

Managing Director NGC, Engr. Altaf Hussain Malik, commended the efforts of the Project Delivery South team. He appreciated the team for initiating the construction work. Mr Malik directed them to maintain high standards and meet the project timelines.

Engr. Rasheed A. Bhutto emphasized the importance of the project and urged the contractors to complete the work according to stipulated timelines. He noted that Gharo Grid Station will accelerate the development of Pakistan’s renewable energy sector. It will strengthen the national transmission network, he said.  The project will enhance system reliability, improve voltage profiles across the NGC and HESCO networks and reduce transmission losses.

Managing Director Siemens Energy, Engr. Nadeem Ali Kazmi and Country Director KfW Mr. Sebastin Jacobi also spoke on occasion. They reiterated their commitment to continue collaborating with NGC.

Local team presented traditional Sindhi Ajrak, Topi, and shields to the distinguished guests. They also planted saplings at the conclusion of the event. GM PD (South) Engr. Muhammad Akram Dharejo, GM PD (North)Muhammad Shahid Nazir, GM AM (South) Engr. Muhammad Rafique attended the event. GM (Media & PR) Muhammad Ibrahim, Chief Engineers, NGC officers, contractors, consultants and other stakeholders also attended.
