Pakistan has become one of the first nations in Asia-Pacific region to adopt WiFi7.
Behind the achievement is the latest move announced by the Pakistan Telecommunications Authority (PTA). It stated: PTA approved the adoption of the latest WiFi generation, WiFi 7.
WiFi 7 and future generations, according to the PTA press release, will operate on the 6 GHz network band. The adoption, it said, reflects Pakistan’s commitment to digital innovation and leadership.
“Wi-Fi 7 delivers robust reliability, ultra-high data rates and low latency,” it stated. The PTA press release added: the WiFi7 enabls 8K streaming, AR/VR, and industrial automation.
The latest network will strengthen connectivity for households and small-medium enterprises (SMEs). The WiFi7 will help fastest connectivity at educational institutions, campuses, hospitals, healthcare sectors and smart cities. It will ease congestion in legacy bands and reduce broadband delivery costs.
Dawn reported: “This development comes a week after Information and Technology Secretary Zarrar Hasham said that restoring damaged undersea internet cables may take four to five weeks.”
WiFi 7:
Wi-Fi 7 (also called 802.11be EHT) can push up to 40Gbps data speeds, compared with around 10Gbps for the preceding Wi-Fi 6 standard. Many routers, mesh systems, and client devices like phones and PCs now support Wi-Fi 7.
CCC Workshop:
Meanwhile, the telecom authority organised a two-day workshop on Community-Centered Connectivity (CCC) at PTA Headquarters, Islamabad.
According to press release: Chairman PTA Major General (R) Hafeez ur Rehman graced reviewed the mock CCC models. The participants developed the models. He said that digital access and inclusion remain central to PTA’s vision. “CCC offers an innovative and sustainable solution to connect the unconnected.”
Based on the training content and tools, workshop, the participants developed four CCC solution models tailored for Pakistan. Local communities could operate and adopt them. The PTA organised the workshop in collaboration with the ISOC and the GDIP. Representatives from MoIT&T, PTA, FAB, USF, NRSP, SRSP, Community Development Foundation as well as telecom operators attended.
