Punjab Floods: Qadirabad Headworks May Collapse

Flood Forecasting Division (FFD) Lahore division website latest update shows red points on River Ravi between Lahore and Faisalabad. It indicates exceptionally high flood in the area stretching over 150 kilometre in length.

Currently, 91,400 cusecs of water are flowing through River Ravi near Shahdara, a historic town located along the river, across from the Walled City of Lahore.

FFD Map also shows red spots in Sutlej near Kasur but then it goes blue and green, indicating low and normal flow till Bahawalpur.

Flood could potentially damage homes, crops in lush green area between Lahore and Faisalabad, if intensity persists. Massive encroachment in Ravi River along with unplanned housing colonies and infrastructure could double the damages, many fear.

Successive governments in Pakistan have neither tried to modernise the weather/flood monitoring technology, not shown interest to act against encroachment.

Flood Forecasting Division:

FFD warns Chenab, Ravi and Sutlej rivers could still face extremely high flood.

In fresh update it states: Floodwater level ranged from high at Marala to extremely high at Khanki Barrage and Qadirabad Headworks.

Situated in the Gujranwala District, downstream from the Khanki Barrage, Qadirabad Headworks project, serves as key component for irrigation purpose and to divert floodwaters. Authorities fear it can collapse as it currently records 1,077, 952 cusecs inflow and outflow.

FFD says: very high flood at Jassar, a high flood at Shahdara and a medium flood at Ballocki.

PDMA:

The Punjab Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA):  Risk of Qadirabad headworks collapse. If the headworks collapses, PDMA warned that Hafizabad and Chiniot areas could face severe damages.

Punjab government has put on high alert all the concerned authorities to cope with the situation. Reports say the provincial government has also sought help from the armed forces in rescue operations. The Punjab government has appealed to the people to stay alert and cooperate with authorities.
