Punjab Freezes TLP Assets Valued at Rs23.4 Billion, Announces Madaris Registration

Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) holds assets worth Rs23.4 billion and operates 92 bank accounts across Punjab.

The Punjab government revealed this on Tuesday, claiming that the authorities have seized all assets and closed all the bank accounts belonging to the banned organisation.

The federal government had banned the Barelvi school-of-thought–aligned religious party last month following violent protests.

Punjab — which remained the centre of the party’s activism over the past decade — subsequently witnessed a widespread police crackdown on TLP leaders and workers. The provincial government seized the TLP headquarters in Lahore along with party offices at the divisional, district, and tehsil levels.

Azma Bukhari:

Punjab Information Minister Azma Zahid Bukhari said that Punjab police registered have registered cases against 90 financiers of the TLP. It also registered case 31 people for spreading hate and violence on social media.

She claimed police have arrested total 830 people of the banned organisation. It is important to mention here that TLP head Saad Rizvi’s whereabouts are still unknown.

Stipend For Imam Mosques:

As Punjab government has already announced Rs.25,000 per month stipend for imams of mosques across Punjab, Ms Bukhari claims the process for registration is successfully continuing.

The authorities, she said, have so far geo-tagged 73,000 mosques and registered 50,000 imams for stipend.  “The government has completed registration of 84 percent prayer leaders [imam mosque] and will soon achieve the target of 100 percent.”

However, religious parties particularly JUI-F has vehemently rejected the stipend move by the Punjab government. JUI-F head Maulana Fazlur Rehman said the government intended to buy the conscious of the religious scholars. “We will never sell our souls to the governments,” he said while addressing gatherings in Chiniot and Multan.

But Azma said the process of registration is going smooth and will achieve its objective.

Madaris Registration:

Azma Bukhari also hinted at the fresh start of registration process of religious seminaries across Punjab. She said the provincial government has already taken on board the five federations of the religious seminaries for the purpose.

She said the Punjab government has 6,222 Afghan refugees to their country in past three weeks.
