Punjabi Comedy Icon Jaswinder Bhalla No More

One of the most celebrated Punjabi artists, Jaswinder Sing Bhalla, passed away on Friday morning. He was 65.

He took his last breath at Mohali’s Fortis Hospital after a brief illness. Doctors have not disclosed yet the exact cause of his death. Family announced that his cremation will take place on August 23, at 12 PM at Mohali’s Balongi cremation ground.

Bhalla enjoyed equal fame among Punjabi diaspora and Indian and Pakistani Punjab. Thousands of his fans react to social media on his sudden death. Punjabi film industry icons term it a huge loss to the Pollywood.

Bhalla started his professional career as a comedian in 1988.

He sharp wit and satire against religious fanatics and self-centred politicians landed him in trouble on several occasions.

Jaswinder Bhalla was also known for his outstanding comic timing.

Chahcha Chatar Sing, Advocate Dhillon:

Punjab will never forget his iconic comic characters “Chacha Chatar Singh” and “Advocate Dhillon”. Bhalla played these roles in 1988’s audio series “Chhankata” and hit movie “Carry on Jatta”.

The movie was released in 2012, followed by its second and third installments in 2018 and 2023. The upcoming fourth instalment of the franchise, “Carry On Jatta 4” , is scheduled to be released on June 26, 2026.

He appeared in numerous Punjabi films like “Jatt & Juliet”, “Mahaul Theek Hai”, “Chak De Phatte” and “Sardaarji 3”. “Shinda Shinda No Papa”, starring Gippy Grewal, is his last screen appearance.

Born on 4 May 1960 in Ludhiana, Jaswinder Bhalla was the son of Master Bahadur Singh Bhalla, a primary school teacher. He earned a Ph.D. in agriculture and served as a professor at Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana, until his retirement in 2020.

A strong advocate of peace and friendship between people of East and West Punjab, he also visited Kartarpur in April 2022.
