The trailer of “The Bengal Files” has created a buzz in Pakistan and India, sparking debate on Direct Action Day.
The 1946’s event, “Direct Action Day”, is currently among the top trends in Pakistan.
Vivek Agnihotri released the trailer of his trilogy film two days ago. However, police halted its screening in Kolkata, the centre of the August 16, 1946 riots.
Called by the All-India Muslim League, the day is remembered as the 1946 Calcutta Riots. The League, Hindu Mahasabha, and the Indian National Congress each have their own explanations for the event. Historians believe ‘Direct Action Day’ played a key role in the partition of India.
‘The Bengal Files’ is the third and final instalment Agnihotri’s ‘Files Trilogy.” Movie is about the Calcutta riots. Based on modern Indian history, the movie’s 3min-33-second trailer featured a debate scene between Gandhi and Jinnah. Anupam Kher and Rajesh Khera played the roles, respectively.
Agnihotri has released ‘The Tashkent Files’ in 2019 and ‘The Kashmir Files’ in 2022.
Following the ban on the screening of ‘The Bengal Files’ in Kolkata, Agnihotri staged a protest and termed it dictatorship and anarchy. Indian media quoted him as saying: “They [authorities] cannot silence me.” The film, he said, talks about demographic change. “West Bengal state do not want to show it because the state itself empowers demographic change.”
