Tianjin SCO Summit 2025 Highlights: Shehbaz-Putin Moment

Tianjin SCO Summit 2025 is taking place in China in extremely complicated global scenario.

Over 20 world leaders including President Vladimir Putin and Prime Minister Narendra Modi have attended the dinner hosted by President Xi Jinping.

It is first time in seven years that Indian Prime Minister Modi has met President Xi. They warmly shook hands and exchanged pleasantries.

Over 20 foreign leaders and 10 heads of international organisations are attending the two-day summit in northern China city. 

Family Photo:

Leaders gathered for family photo. President Xi and his spouse Peng Liyuan welcomed every leader with a handshake before the traditional family photo at the summit. Premier Shehbaz and PM Modi were placed in the front row, former standing at right side while the latter at the left. Both leaders did not meet. Being the host, President Xi occupied the centre position, flanked by his wife on the right and President Putin on the left.

Shehbaz-Putin Moment:

Indian media highlighted moment when PM Shehbaz moved quickly to greet President Putin as he arrived for the group photograph. PM was already positioned in the first row before the arrival of Russian President.

President Xi Jinping Address: 

President Xi told leaders that the SCO carries a greater responsibility for safeguarding regional peace and stability. It also bears responsibility to promoting development and prosperity among member states. He expressed confidence that with the joint efforts, the SCO Summit would prove a complete success. Xi said the SCO has grown into an important force in building new forms of international relations. SCO, he added, will work towards advancing a community with a shared future for humanity. SCO is poised to play a bigger role in coming years.

Shehbaz-Erdogan Meeting:

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif met with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on the sidelines of the summit. The two leaders condemned the Israel’s genocidal policies, according to official statement. They pledged to advocate for rights of people of Palestine at all international platforms.

“The two sides exchanged views on key regional and international developments and expressed grave concern over the worsening humanitarian situation in Gaza.”
