Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz on Thursday virtually inaugurated 60 electric buses on 13 routes across six more districts, extending public transport facilities to areas receiving such services for the first time under the Punjab government’s green transport initiative.
The newly launched fleet comprises 15 buses in Khushab and nine each in Khanewal, Bhakkar, Attock, Mandi Bahauddin and Hafizabad.
According to the Punjab government, 400 electric buses are already operational in 18 districts. Another 212 buses have arrived in Pakistan for deployment in 20 additional districts. They arrived as part of the province’s plan to induct 1,500 modern electric buses.
In Khushab, the buses will operate from the General Bus Stand to Girot Chowk, Mitha Tiwana and Mungwal. In Khanewal, the service has been launched on the Khanewal-Kabirwala and Jahanian routes.
Nine buses have also been deployed in Bhakkar to operate between the General Bus Stand, Darya Khan and Behl. In Attock, the service will run on the POF Sanjwal-Hazro and Hakimabad-Attock Khurd routes.
Electric Busses in Mandi Bahauddin and Hafizabad:
In Mandi Bahauddin, the buses will ply between Kathiala Sheikhan and Rasul Village, and from College Chowk to Mano Chak. In Hafizabad, the service has commenced on the Jinnah Chowk (Inner City) route and the Ghora Chowk-Jalalpur Bhattian corridor.
The government said electric bus services would be expanded to 14 more districts by the end of July.
Lahore, Gujranwala and Multan will each receive 12 buses. While Murree, Gujrat and Sheikhupura will get 11 buses each during July. Chiniot, Layyah, Okara and Sialkot will each receive 10 buses, whereas Vehari, Kasur, Lodhran, Nankana Sahib and Narowal will receive 11 buses each by the end of the month.
The remaining 488 electric buses under the project are expected to arrive in Pakistan by the end of August 2026. And will subsequently be made operational in different districts.
CM Punjab said the Punjab government had earmarked billions of rupees under the Annual Development Programme (ADP) for developing modern transport infrastructure.
She said the government was committed to extending safe, environmentally friendly electric public transport not only to major cities but to every tehsil of Punjab.
