IMC Celebrates 35 Years of Toyota Operations in Pakistan

Indus Motor Company (IMC) celebrated 35 years of Toyota’s operations in Pakistan, marking more than three decades of manufacturing growth, localisation, and sustained contribution to the country’s automotive sector.

Since beginning operations, the company has sold over 1.2 million vehicles nationwide.

IMC’s nationwide network of dealers and suppliers supports more than 55,000 jobs across the value chain. Over the past 35 years, the company has contributed around USD 6.3 billion in taxes to the national exchequer, accounting for roughly 1% of the country’s annual tax revenues.

The milestone was commemorated at a ceremony held at Toyota’s manufacturing facility in Port Qasim, Karachi. The event was attended by His Excellency Shuichi Akamatsu, Ambassador of Japan to Pakistan; Toyota Motor Corporation and Toyota Tsusho Corporation executives, including Hiroshi Nambu, Masahiko Maeda, Shigeru Harada, and Hiroshi Yonenaga; as well as IMC Chairman Mohamedali Rafiq Habib, CEO Ali Asghar Jamali, and around 3,000 employees.

The first Toyota Corolla assembled in Pakistan nearly 35 years ago remains preserved at IMC’s headquarters. From an initial annual production capacity of 5,000 vehicles, the company has expanded to 76,000 units per year. Since its incorporation in 1989, IMC has played a key role in developing Pakistan’s automotive industry and strengthening local engineering and manufacturing capabilities.

IMC highlighted that its local vendor network supplies more than Rs 210 million worth of parts daily to support production. Its vehicles are distributed through 58 authorised dealerships across the country.

The company also acknowledged Pakistan’s support over the years, stating that a conducive policy environment has helped promote industrial growth and localisation.

Speaking at the ceremony, Ambassador Shuichi Akamatsu described Toyota as a strong symbol of Pakistan–Japan friendship, noting that continued investment reflects deepening bilateral relations.

Hiroshi Nambu congratulated IMC on the milestone, highlighting its commitment to quality, reliability, and safety. He also noted that IMC achieved “Zero Defect” status in Toyota Motor Corporation quality audits for two consecutive years, reflecting global manufacturing standards.

Shigeru Harada praised IMC’s localisation and technology transfer efforts, adding that continued collaboration has helped save billions in foreign exchange and strengthen Pakistan’s automotive ecosystem.

Mohamedali Rafiq Habib termed the journey a long-term success story built on partnerships, while Ali Asghar Jamali emphasised IMC’s $736 million investment over the past 35 years, with an additional $300 million planned in the coming five years.

He also highlighted the company’s “Concern Beyond Cars” social initiatives, which benefit over 200,000 people annually, and stressed the need for a stable, forward-looking automotive policy to support industry growth and reduce import dependence.

As part of the celebrations, guests also marked a milestone by planting IMC’s one millionth tree under its “Green Pakistan” initiative, making it the first automotive company in the country to reach this achievement within five years. The initiative reflects the company’s focus on environmental sustainability and ecosystem restoration.

Incorporated in 1989 as a joint venture between the House of Habib, Toyota Tsusho Corporation, and Toyota Motor Corporation, IMC is the authorised manufacturer and assembler of Toyota vehicles, parts, and accessories in Pakistan.
