Punjab chief minister Maryam Nawaz has approved the launch of an electric bus service at the tehsil level from January 2027.
As per statement, the government will deploy 1,500 buses in 91 tehsils.
The chief minister has also approved dedicated electric bus depots for each tehsil. The government says the first batch of buses is arriving in Lahore in January. The provincial government aims to have 3,000 electric buses operational across Punjab by June 2027. Punjab CM chaired a meeting in this regard.
According to a briefing, Multan’s nine tehsils would receive 169 buses. Sahiwal’s four tehsils will get 87 and Bahawalpur’s 11 tehsils will receive 215 buses. The government has allocated 63 buses for Dera Ghazi Khan’s 10 tehsils. Faisalabad’s 12 tehsils and Sargodha’s 14 tehsils will get 202 and198 buses respectively.
Gujranwala’s seven tehsils would receive 125 buses and Gujrat’s eight tehsils will receieve122 electric busses. The authorities will deploy 219 buses across 16 tehsils of Rawalpindi.
Electric Bus Service in Punjab:
The briefing said 612 electric buses have become fully operational in various districts of the province, benefiting millions of commuters daily. Another 192 buses in Multan and other districts would become operational within days.
The authorities said they will provide additional buses to Sargodha, Sahiwal, Faisalabad and Lahore. And Muzaffargarh, Rawalpindi, Jhang, Bahawalpur, Rahim Yar Khan and Attock. Bhakkar, Hafizabad, Khanewal, Chiniot, Layyah, Okara, Sialkot, Murree, Gujrat and Sheikhupura would also receive additional services.
The government has planned further electric buses for Mandi Bahauddin, Vehari, Kasur, Lodhran. And Nankana Sahib, Narowal, Gujranwala and Multan.
The chief minister set a target for completion of the first phase of the electric bus programme by the end of September this year.
Meanwhile, work on mass transit systems in Faisalabad and Gujranwala is progressing rapidly. A project for the rehabilitation and reconstruction of 25 stations of the Lahore Metrobus service is also under way.
